Free 99 Fridge, affectionately called F99F, is definitely one of my passion projects. I love their mission and have been involved for over a year now. Memorial Day weekend marked my year. I personally like to see how something is organized and working before I recommend it to others and I feel comfortable recommending this to our communities.
“Free99Fridge is an Atlanta-based grassroots organization committed to fighting for food justice & addressing the needs of our neighbors through mutual aid. We provide high-quality produce and non-perishable food at no cost to anyone who wants or needs it via our community fridge network. Our community fridges are stocked and maintained by volunteers, growers, and local businesses who see value in supporting their community. This is a community-run, community-backed effort. Our crew of volunteers makes this project what it is. We are a solution-oriented collective aiming to build up the community and end food disparities in Atlanta one fridge at a time.”
It is truly a mutual aid project, not a charity project. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Yes, it is ALWAYS OPEN. That is a good thing because there is always someone in need of food. I invite you to join this group and assist with feeding the neighbors as we call them. Who are the neighbors? Anyone and everyone who uses the fridges located throughout Atlanta, Decatur, and Clarkston. I have met mothers, fathers, children, senior citizens, individuals, grandparents, groups, the homeless, etc… So yes, anybody and everybody, no matter what their need is welcome to donate and/or use the fridges. Currently, there are active locations at the following:
- Hodgepodge Coffee Shop - 720 Moreland Avenue SE Atlanta, GA 30316
- North Decatur Presbyterian Church - 611 Medlock Road Decatur, GA 30033
- Refuge Coffee Co - 4170 East Ponce de Leon Avenue NE Clarkston, GA 300210
“Free99Fridge, like many other community fridges, operates on what is known as a mutual aid model. This differs from a traditional charity with the goal of empowerment. For the people. From the people.”
This organization was founded by LaTisha Springer and was a great idea she had during the start of COVID when most organizations had retreated and there was no way for people to get fed. Streets were empty, the country was on a lockdown and the homeless were left to truly make a way out of no way. So LaTisha stepped up and was the difference. Free 99 Fridge was born. Read about it here and here. It was and still is a good thing. There is a constant need and a constant revolving door of volunteers who make it all possible and I invite you to jump in where you can. You truly can volunteer for a lot or a little. New volunteer training is coming up on Wednesday, June 29th and it is virtual. Send me an email (KimberlyWright@MacaroniKID.com) and I will forward you the details when they are available.
I am raising funds for F99F so I can prepare more meals for them. They ALWAYS need prepared meals, water, and grab-n-go snacks. Please donate to me personally so I can continue making it happen. I would gratefully appreciate it. This is right along the lines of how my mother and grandmothers raised me. They always took care of family, friends, and the village. I will gratefully provide receipts via my personal IG account Keystrokes By Kimberly (@keystrokesbykimberly) • Instagram photos and videos and both of my Macaroni KID accounts Macaroni KID Decatur 🥰 (@mackiddecatur) • Instagram photos and videos and Macaroni KID East Atlanta (@mackideastatl) • Instagram photos and videos. So whether you want to donate $5, $25, $50, or even $150 dollars you can see how it is helping people through the mutual aid of F99F.
Stay social with F99F via Instagram and YouTube.
