Let's Celebrate 200 Years of Decatur - A City with History and Heart!

Celebrate good times, one historic occasion, and the bicentennial anniversary of Decatur GA

Celebrate good times and one historic occasion!  On December 10th the city of Decatur will turn 200 years old, founded in 1822.  A year later, in 1823, the city of Decatur was incorporated, making it one of the oldest in the state. So please save the entire weekend and dates of Saturday, December 9th, and Sunday, December 10th. 

The city of Decatur will celebrate its bicentennial anniversary, which will be big! Imagine celebrating 200 years of a city with history and heart by hosting two days of events. They even have a 200 Stories Project for you to personally participate in.  It will be a grand celebration.  

Saturday - December 10th

~ Bicentennial Walk & Run - 8:45 am

Run or walk the beautiful 5k course at Legacy Park. All funds for this event go to the Bicentennial Fund, funding legacy projects like the 200 Stories, replenishing the city's tree canopy, and affordable housing.

~ Bicentennial Parade - 2:00 pm

Celebrate Decatur's 200th anniversary by participating in the bicentennial parade. Decorate yourself, your bike, or your car.

2 p.m. Lineup at Decatur Post Office
3 p.m. Parade to the square begins

After the parade, stick around for 200th birthday activities on the square. There will be live music, activities for all ages, a chance to fill out your “What I Wish for Decatur’s Future” card, cupcakes, and more. 

~ The Metronomes - 4 pm

Enjoy a performance by The Metronomes at the community bandstand. 

~ Fireworks - At dusk

Fireworks begin at dark (around 5:30 pm). 


Sunday - December 11, 2023

~ Walking Tour - 12:30 pm

City Planner Aileen de la Torre will lead a walking tour at 12:30 p.m. The hour-long walking tour will focus on the downtown area, which is the oldest part of the city.

~ 200 Stories Project - 2:0pm. 

The city will hold a screening and panel discussion of the 200 Stories project on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Agnes Scott College, located at 141 E. College Avenue. Be sure to add your personal story here. 

~ Menorah Lighting - 4:30 p.m.

Join in the Chanukah celebration on the square. Enjoy hot drinks, latkes, music, and photos with Mr. Dreidel! This event will be held on the square at 101 East Court Square.
