The Game at Horizon Theatre was such a great adult, and I do mean adult time! This play by Bekah Brunstetter and directed by Caroline Jane Davis was a fabulous kick-off to the 40th season of Horizon Theatre. I love the theater and I have been to all-size theaters yet Horizon won my heart. For a first-time visit, this was awesome. Kimberly was invited and as her guest, I was pleasantly surprised. The cast was very impressive and the adult content was something else. This is a 21+ crowd play with all the sexual topics.
Upon driving up, my first impression was how simple and semi-private the theater was. They presented an environment that was very ADA-friendly and even offered very close handicapped parking, this is not always the experience, it was clear that handicap/disabled parking was a forethought and not an afterthought. I also noticed when my physically challenged friend went to open the door the warm welcoming usher physically moved to assist, my friend with entrance which was endearing to me and warmed my heart from the start.
Kimberly and I immediately got our playbill and were ushered into the area for snacks and drinks, this production did not have any intermission, however, it was perfect in length. The snack bar offered an assortment of snacks from alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to apple chips, cookies, and coffee. Although limited in offering there was truly something for everyone. The auditorium is both nostalgic and theatrical in the sense it feels like a high school theater because you are so up close and personal without a bad seat in the house. The set was so today. It was beautiful, modern, and very well decorated, high-budget if you will, with a Japandi style design and run by artistic professionals. The seating was vast and the crowd was diverse which was a comforting bonus.

The premise of the play is a group of ladies plotting to subjugate their spouses and significant others, to keep them from playing “The Game” and in turn paying more attention to them. The play has added depth to each female’s character, touching on topics of consent, shopping addiction, war photography, LGBT, stereotypes, and the despair of aging in modern society.
Although these topics could be heavy, “The Game” maintained its light-heartedness and there were several moments of unexpected pure laugh-out-loud joy moments. My favorite moments were the Skype interviews. The scenes were especially hilarious. Their scenes were in desperate need of guidelines and etiquette.
I would highly recommend attending a show, as a perfect date night outing, girlfriends outing, or even a solo outing. Hurry though because the show closes on Sunday, July 28th.
